North Dakota State Fair’s Youngest Competitors Crawl and Trot to Victory

MINOT, N.D. – Some of the North Dakota State Fair’s smallest competitors stole the spotlight on Tuesday, July 21st, as families packed SRT Festival Park for the annual Diaper Derby and Toddler Trot.

The beloved Fair tradition gave the youngest fairgoers an opportunity to race their way to the finish line, with babies crawling and toddlers trotting toward victory while parents used toys, snacks, bottles, and plenty of encouragement to cheer them on.

The Diaper Derby featured one heat with four determined crawlers. While several competitors took their time getting started, 11-month-old Beckham Knipp kept the crowd laughing as he made a few turns just before the finish line before finally crawling across to claim the victory.

The excitement continued during the Toddler Trot, where two heats of six competitors raced toward the finish. Both winners wasted little time making their way to the end of the course, sprinting across the finish line to enthusiastic cheers from family members and spectators.

This year’s Toddler Trot winners were:

  • Heat 1: William Bagwell, 23 months
  • Heat 2: Kenny Tichenor, 22 months

Each heat winner received a prize bucket filled with goodies to celebrate their accomplishment.

“These kinds of events show that some of the best Fair memories come from the simplest moments,” said Liberty Zuchara, Marketing Intern of the North Dakota State Fair. “Watching the babies and toddlers race brought so much joy to everyone watching. Seeing the crowd cheer on every child made this one of my favorite events of the Fair.”

The North Dakota State Fair extends its congratulations to all of the young competitors and thanks every family who participated. Whether they crossed the finish line first or simply enjoyed the journey, each child helped create smiles, laughter, and memories that will last long after the Fair ends.

The North Dakota State Fair congratulates all of this year’s participants for their courage, determination, and great attitudes. We look forward to seeing everyone back to race again next year!
