MINOT, N.D. – Arena 2 was filled with excitement on Wednesday, July 22nd, as young cowboys and cowgirls showcased their horsemanship and skills during the annual Show-De-O at the North Dakota State Fair.
Hosted by the North Dakota Equine Association, the event welcomed approximately 40 contestants ranging from preschoolers to young teens for an afternoon of friendly competition from 4 to 7 p.m.
The event was coordinated by Kaycee Wilen, who helped establish the North Dakota Equine Association and has played an instrumental role in creating and growing youth rodeo opportunities across North Dakota. Through the Show-De-O, young riders are introduced to western horsemanship in a fun, encouraging environment that builds confidence, sportsmanship, and a lifelong appreciation for rodeo.
The youngest competitors, ages 5 and under, kicked off the event with a stick horse race and balloon penning competition, proving you’re never too young to begin your rodeo journey. Every participant in the youngest division received a small prize in recognition of their enthusiasm and participation.
Older contestants competed on horseback in four classic events: Poles, Barrel Racing, Flag Race, and Keyhole. Riders competed in three age divisions:
- 6–8 years old
- 9–11 years old
- 12–14 years old
The top four contestants in each event and age division received prizes featuring horse care supplies, equipment, and western-themed items. Overall division champions were also presented with custom-made “Show-De-O Champion” belt buckles in recognition of their outstanding performances.
As an added bonus, every contestant received a complimentary ticket to attend the Ranch Rodeo, which began later that evening at 7 p.m., allowing the young competitors and their families to continue enjoying an evening celebrating North Dakota’s western heritage.

“The Show-De-O gives young riders a chance to build confidence, develop their horsemanship skills, and experience the excitement of competition in a supportive environment,” said Paige Zimprich, Competitive Exhibits Intern for the North Dakota State Fair. “Events like this encourage kids to get involved at a young age, make new friends, learn good sportsmanship, and develop a lifelong appreciation for agriculture.”
